LNG and Bio-LNG trucks in Finland: fleet growth, fuel sales and infrastructure

Market development 2020–2025
Finland has become one of the most dynamic markets for gas-powered heavy trucks in Northern Europe. Over the past five years the methane truck fleet has roughly tripled, new registrations of gas trucks have surged, and almost all methane used in transport is biomethane (CBM/LBM). Below is the picture for 2020–2025.
1. Gas truck fleet – five-year growth
| Year-end | Gas trucks (CNG/LNG + CBM/LBM) | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | ~295 | Start of visible growth |
| 2021 | ~393 | |
| 2022 | ~488 | |
| 2023 | ~550–580 | |
| 2024 | ~769–785 | Strong acceleration |
| 2025 | ~870–900 | Continued growth |
Key points:
- Fleet roughly tripled in five years.
- 2024 new gas-truck registrations +77% (nearly +96% including used imports).
- In 2025 the gas share of new heavy-truck (≥16 t) registrations reached about 10%.
- Gas trucks are being registered several times more often than battery-electric trucks.
2. Bio-LNG / biomethane sales and use
| Indicator | Data |
|---|---|
| Transport biomethane / biogas use | ~0.7 TWh in 2025 (estimate) |
| Total biogas + biomethane consumption | ~2.3 TWh in 2025 (from ~1.3 TWh in 2024) |
| Biomethane guarantees of origin imported | 2023: 240 GWh → 2024: 400 GWh → 2025: 1.3 TWh |
| Share of methane in transport | Almost entirely biomethane; fossil gas is minimal |
Exact public figures for “tonnes of Bio-LNG sold at filling stations” are not available, but virtually all methane used in road transport is biomethane (CBG/LBG). Strong growth in imported guarantees of origin in 2025 shows that demand is outpacing domestic production.
3. Filling-station network (2025–2026)
| Type | Number of stations |
|---|---|
| CBM / CNG | ~88–90 |
| LBM / LNG | ~27–29 (+ 5–6 under construction / planned) |
The network continues to expand (Gasum and others). Northern coverage already reaches Rovaniemi. For long-haul operations the LBM network is becoming sufficient for nationwide use.
4. Key trends and drivers
What is growing:
- Gas truck fleet (especially LBM for heavy combinations up to 75–76 t);
- Demand for biomethane, including imports;
- LBM filling-station network;
- Gas share of new heavy-truck sales (~10% in 2025).
Main drivers:
- Customer requirements to cut emissions;
- Strong performance of LBM (range >1,000 km);
- New higher-power models from Scania, Volvo and Iveco (up to 500 hp);
- Policy support for biomethane.
Constraints:
- Domestic biomethane production is not keeping up with demand → rising imports;
- Gas trucks still account for less than 1% of the total truck fleet.
5. Conclusion
Finland is one of the fastest-growing gas-truck markets in Northern Europe. The fleet has roughly tripled in five years, with acceleration in 2024–2025. Bio-LNG / biomethane dominates fuel use for gas trucks; fossil gas is almost absent. The LBM filling network is expanding and biomethane demand is growing faster than domestic production, driving strong import growth in 2025.
